I guess its all down to playing styles and what individually we want from the game.

Just like a meerkat
I suppose i just prefer playing as a preditor over playing as prey. I know there is a chance i will die but it hardly ever causes a party wipe, even with heros, finding the right blend of builds to just go into an area and clear it out as fast as possible is where i get my enjoyment.

It seems I didn't mention I was going for survivor on my new necro also ....
This what my babez is currently running:
Spirit Rift is there because it looks so sweet! (I've seen it trigger only a few times - stuff just dies too fast for it to matter.)
Same with Ancestors! (Well Ancestors DOES trigger - nevertheless it's still beyond godly to look at!)
They are the first ones to be dumped for Cap Signets/Rez.
Regarding the heroes & hench:
Melonni will be dumped once I get my hands on The General!
Not sure about running Masters too. Currently it is still working - but I might just throw Enfeebling on my necro and dump him and go with Goren (Although since I ALWAYS go for "Brains" that will have to wait till the end of C3!) since I always run just one necro in my teams. Less squishes to worry about!
Once SS became worth it - I kicked the MM and the eles goodbye and went with physical heavy teams. They DO massive damage and also PROTECT from massive damage! If certain hench aren't available - I take what work best with this team-build- warriors, assassins, paragons.
Equipment:
Anything that gives +60hp. 670ish hp is BEYOND godly!
Running a non+5 spear because I LOVE the skin!
The shield also looks beyond sweet (which is the reason why I am using it) - plus the extra armour is nice!
Since one doesn't plan on dying - there is no fear of not having enough energy because of DP!
The only problem might be the low energy ... if it wasn't for SR. 30 energy is pretty much all the energy a necro needs (It was the same energy pool that I was running when I was spamming Fiends!)!
The build:
As you can see it's not exactly Survivor material. The problem with Survivor-material-builds is that they pretty much serve one purpose - keeping oneself alive. Which is completely fine and dandy IF the point is to farm the hell out of the title and get it over and done with as soon as possible! Otherwise one is playing as the weak link of the party for a VERY long time!
Basically - the surviving part of the build aren't the skills one puts on the skillbar - it's the person behind the keyboard. Know what kind of foes you'll run into, know what the quest and missions are about, know what (and when!) triggers certain foes, ....
The more you know - the less you need to rely on cheap ass tricks ( I am looking at you - Protective Spirit!)!
Progress through the game:
Vabbi in C3. I need to get to Lair (I think!) as soon as possible - since the Hero Skill Trainer should have Mark Of Pain!
Droks in C1. I needed to ascend for the 50k bonus and wanted SS.
Arborstone in Factions. I HATE that mission! But I know I need to get it over and done with otherwise I'll run out of quests to do! Plus I need to cap Icy Veins!
Doing quests (Primarily! I LOVE questing in Kaineng!) and capping elites. Although not the useless ones! ("Useless" being used mildly here! I've capped Extend Conditions - BUT I refuse to cap Mantra Of Recall and Energy Drain! I also don't cap useless primary-attribute elites for other classes! Caps are 1k and I am poor beyond words lately!)
Edit:
Woot!
Tier2!

First of all - on a PvE necro?
Second of all - on a PvE mesmer?
To keep it short - yes they are bad. And seriously not worth the elite slot.

Actually they are.
One is an enchantment which will just end up getting shattered.
It was also insanely abused by the lovely monks so it needed to be toned done.
The second one doesn't only function as e-management but also e-denial. Which means it needs to be toned down because the e-denial effect is just too powerful.
Which really makes them both pretty darn bad as e-management.
Especially if one can have GoLE.
BUT on topic - my survivor is keeping strong. The boy completed Nightfall - although I have to admit that Shiro gave me a bit problems! I took the Dervy hero with me with Wild Blow and the chick just couldn't stay alive! So we got to Shiro and everytime Shiro only MOVED - she was dead already!
/resign
So I switched her for my lovely lvl17 assassin hero - and voila - Victory was ours!
Plus the chick leveled up by killing Shiro!
So I took the same team to take down Abbadon - just switched out a few elites for Cautery Signet and we did it easily!
So now I am going to start bugging my guildies to start doing FoW trips with me since I am just to bored to complete C1 and Arborstone!
/shakefist at the person that thought that Arborstone might be fun!

ive got a necro leg survivor myself, there is no need to run from combat as these obviously narrow minded people think. i compleated Proph and factions wile on the survivor track. Curses are a good set of skills to run, use things like Parasitic Bond and Insidious Parasite they can be quite helpfull sometimes.
if u want to party with humans go ahead u can still play your role as your would if u wasent a survivor. just be more tactfull when luring (Lets tanks tank, and flag heros 1st if your worried about a powerfull boss ect.
ofc capping elites is a great way to gain xp. NF has the most elites for u to cap eairly in the game.
PS. Heros are much better to fight along side then humans anyway. Especialy if they have the views about survivors that this lot have

I once had a guildie who got LS on his necromancer. He reccomended playing a minion master with a bar like this.
[skill]animate flesh golem[/skill][skill]animate vampiric horror[/skill][skill]animate shambling horror[/skill][skill]animate bone fiend[/skill][skill]blood of the master[/skill][skill]dark bond[/skill][skill]infuse condition[/skill][skill]mystic regeneration[/skill].
This should keep you alive and at a safe distance from the agro.
When you can't play a minion master, use stuff like this.
[skill]insidious parasite[/skill][skill]parasitic bond[/skill][skill]life siphon[/skill][skill]spiteful spirit[/skill] And after that whatever you're comfortable with.
